Webmaster 2013-14

As ManSSAGO webmaster I have been responsible for updating the existing ManSSAGO website:

This involved:

  • maintaining and updating an existing WordPress installation;
  • heavily editing the existing theme CSS;
  • investigating appropriate new plugins, selecting the best candidates and installing them.

I have also been responsible for the ManSSAGO Ball Event website:

This website allows each national event to create their own layout and CSS. My work on this site involved:

  • creation of new responsive website CSS;
  • creation of some of the website artwork*;
  • editing the existing HTML layout.

*The banner art, poster art and sidebar design were created by Hari. The ball badge design was created by Liz.

I spent 4 months aiding in the instruction of 3rd year undergraduates in C++ object-oriented programming.


I was responsible for:

  • reviewing student code;
  • giving feedback;
  • teaching students.

I also gained experience in using Visual Studio 2010.

AstraZeneca: Work Placement

Work Placement

During my PhD I undertook a 5 month work placement at AstraZeneca, Alderley Park.


I was responsible for:

  • running corticosterone ELISA on blood samples;
  • running corticosterone RIA on blood samples;
  • planning MRI study;
  • carrying out MRI study on 9.4T Bruker system.

I achieved an Upper Second Class (2:1) degree in Physics (BSc) with a first in the final year.

Inalytics: Student Programmer

Student Programmer

I worked as a student programmer transferring existing matrix multiplication code from a CPU implementation to a GPU implementation.


I was responsible for:

  • installation of CUDA software on Linux server;
  • programming matrix multiplication, standard deviation and size band software onto Nvidia graphics card.

Also involved liasing with lead programmer in Edinburgh.

STFC Daresbury Laboratory: Work Experience

Work Experience Placement

I undertook a one month work experience placement at the Medium Energy Ion Scattering Facility at the CCLRC Daresbury laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Paul Bailey.


I was responsible for:

  • baking out the vacuum chamber;
  • ordering and installation of new computer hardware;
  • data analysis of example data.

I was also introduced to research specific software.
